Cowork is something you get with a paid Claude plan, working on folders you point it at. Else is something you can just use: open a tab, hand over a job, and it works inside the apps your work already lives in.
Anthropic's Cowork product page states that it works with a paid plan, and its help centre lists Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Else has no plan at any tier — the first job you hand over is the first thing you pay for.

A month you hand off nothing costs nothing at all. There is no tier that unlocks it, because there are no tiers.

The platform rows were rechecked on 25 August 2026 and had moved, so they have been rewritten. Anthropic’s “Get started with Claude Cowork” article now says Cowork is available on paid plans — Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise — with Claude Desktop for macOS and Windows on all paid plans, and the web and mobile apps on Pro, Max and Team (on Enterprise, where an admin has enabled it). The earlier wording on this page described a beta that no longer applies. Two things we could not confirm on 25 August: whether ChromeOS and Linux are supported, which we have therefore stopped claiming; and the plan prices, because Anthropic’s pricing page renders its figures in a way we could not read — the prices below come from its “Choose a Claude plan” help article instead. Where a cell reads “no per-task figure published”, that means it was absent from the pages we checked — a statement about what is published, not about what exists.
Plenty of people should use Cowork, and this is the short list of when.
You already pay for Claude, so it costs you nothing more — that is the strongest reason on this page and it is theirs. The work lives in folders on your own machine and should stay there. You want one monthly number that cannot move, whatever you throw at it. Several people need it under a plan an organisation can buy. Or you want the rest of Claude in the same place.
You want the work done without joining anything first. Your work lives in Gmail, Drive, Slack or Notion rather than in a folder on one laptop. You want the finished file handed back rather than edited in place, and to be asked before anything is sent. You want to know in dollars what each job cost. Or you need it now, on a machine that is not yours, with nothing to install.
